Winifred Seery
Michael Seery > Winifred Seery > Catherine Wilson > Catherine Withers > Margaret Murphy > Felicity Bent
Winifred Seery was my great-great-grandmother and the daughter of Bridget (nee Daly) and Michael Seery.
Winifred was born in King's County, Ireland, in about 1829 and departed Cork for Sydney with her mother aboard the Duchess of Northumberland on 19 October 1834. Michael had been convicted in 1832 of robbery assisted by fire arms and sentenced to transportation for life and Bridget had subsequently applied to join her husband.
As a child, Winifred lived with her parents at a property called Norwood near Goulburn, on Middle Arm Road, off the road between Goulburn and Tarlo. Her father was a convict servant assigned to Francis McArthur at Norwood and it seems Michael and Bridget did not leave Norwood until about 1853.
Winifred married John Manton in 1845 when she was only about 16 years old and their son, also called John Manton, was born in 1854. I have been unable to find a record of John Manton's birth in NSW so it is likely he was born in England or in Ireland.
In 1856, Winifred married William Wilson at a gold-mining settlement called Devil's Hole Creek, near Windeyer. Her son, John Manton, would have only been about two years old at the time however I do not know whether he was with her in Devil's Hole Creek nor how or why Winifred went to Windeyer. Her son could have been left with her parents in Goulburn or he could have been with his father, wherever he went. I do know that Winifred was still married to John Manton when she married William Wilson.
Winifred and William Wilson seem to have moved to Hartley in 1861 before moving to the Woodhouselee/Tarlo area in around 1862.
