Robert Magrane Reily (son)
Robert Reily > Robert Reily > Annie Reily > Frank Murphy
Robert Magrane Reily was my great-great-grandfather.
Robert was born on 2 October 1844 in the Maitland area of NSW and was christened on 26 January 1845 in the Catholic Parish of West Maitland. He was the son of Robert Magrane Reily and Martha Ann Sharp. Note that Martha was actually still married to her first husband, Christopher Harper at the time of Robert's birth and her name was recorded as 'Martha Harper' when he was baptised [1].

Marriage and Children
Robert married Annie Laura Green on 11 December 1865 in Tumut [2], probably at the Catholic Church of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception [5]. Annie was born in 1851 and was the daughter of George and Ann Green [3].
Note that this means Annie would have been only 14 at the time of their marriage. Assuming this is correct, I wonder if she could have been pregnant when she married. If so, it would have been with a child whose existence is not recorded as the couple's first child was born in October 1866, 10 months after they married.
Annie and Robert had the following 13 children together, all born in the Adelong/Tumut area [4]:
1. Robert George, born 26 October 1866 in Tumut (NSWBDM 15531/1866). Died 16 September 1940 in Cowra (NSWBDM 15521/1940). Buried in Cowra Cemetery.

Living in Gundagai
In 1868, Robert was 24 years old, married and the father of a son when he is recorded as being the licensee of the The Milton Head Inn in Gundagai, not far from Adelong. It seems, therefore, that he followed his father into the hotel business.
Note that his father, Robert Reily senior, is listed as holding the licence for this hotel from 3 May 1853.
The Milton Head Inn was located in Sheridan Street, Gundagai, but does not appear to be still there in 2020. There are, however, at least two pubs in Sheridan Street.
The pub was still standing in 1945 when this description of Gundagai appeared in the Cootamundra Herald:
Gundagai has a fine, large, substantial hospital, having aresident house surgeon, and its funds in a flourishing state; a post and money order office; a telegraph station; a first-class court house (where the Quarter and Petty Sessions and the District Courts are held), Roman Catholic and Wesleyan churches, and a Church of England just about completed, and a commodious national school.
The stores and other buildings are large and handsome, and the hotels roomy and well conducted.
The principal ones are the Australian Arms, Milton's Head, crown Inn, Commercial, Noah's Ark, and Gundagai.
On his daughter, Annie's, death in 1946, Robert's occupation is given as 'postmaster'.

It took just 14 months to complete but eighteen years later the building was found to be too small for the congregation.
