Peter Arthur Merrin
Peter Arthur Merrin was the sixth child and third son of John A Merrin and his wife, Catherine Mary Kavanagh. He was the brother of my great-grandfather, Charles Michael Merrin.
Peter Arthur Merrin seems to have been known as Arthur, at least for most of his adult life. He is not directly related to me however I'm recording some of the information I've found out about him as it may help other researchers.
Peter Arthur Merrin was born in 1869 in Carcoar, NSW. He married Florence Mary Fitzpatrick, the daughter of John James and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, in 1900 in Sydney. Florence had been born in Windsor, NSW in 1873 and was a twin.
Interestingly, Florence was the youngest daughter of Police Sub-Inspector J J Fitzpatrick and attended Windeyer Public School. This places her family in Windeyer when John and Catherine Merrin were living with their children - including Peter/Arthur - in nearby Gulgong and then in Mudgee. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick and Inspector Merrin would have been colleagues.
The couple lived at various times in Newcastle and Sydney, where Arthur seems to have worked as a commercial traveller for most of his career. He worked for a time for a well-known department store in Mudgee called Loneragan's Ltd, where his brothers, Jim and Charlie, also worked. This was probably where he got his start in the world of commercial travelling as we know his family moved to Mudgee sometime after John Merrin's retirement from the police force in October 1881, when Arthur was about 12 years old.
