John Brown: Settler in the Newcastle District 1821
John Brown was a free settler from England who had one of the first land grants in the Hunter Valley, near present-day Maitland.
Brown was one of the first to take up his land in 1822 and called his estate Bolwarra.
Brown ran into financial difficulties and in 1825 he is recorded as protesting against his land being offered for sale.
In the same year, Bolwarra was sold to Thomas Potter Macqueen and by 1828 Peter McIntyre was working on the property, most likely as Macqueen's overseer. Robert Riely, was assigned as a convict servant to McIntyre some time between 1825 and the 1828 census.
The records below are from the Colonial Secretary Index, 1788-1825.
