Joseph Francis Murphy
Joseph Murphy > Joseph Murphy > Frank Murphy
Joseph Francis Murphy was my great-grandfather.
Joseph was the son of Joseph Murphy and Bridget Vogle [1]. He was born in about 1860 in Burrowa, NSW [2]. I've been unable to find a NSW BDM birth record for Joseph (checked 1856-1864).

Marriage to Alice Doughty and Children
Joseph married Alice Doughty in Albury in 1884 (NSWBDM 3517/1884). Alice was the daughter of John and Rebecca Doughty.
The couple had the following children together:
Alice, born in 1885 in Albury (NSWBDM 12704/1885)
Christina J, born in 1888 in Albury (NSWBDM 14058/1888)
Ernest E, a twin born in 1890 in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 34305/1890)
Joseph W, a twin born in 1890 in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 34306/1890)
Jemima E, born in 1893 in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 35415/1893)

Jemima E, born in 1893 in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 35415/1893)
Alice died in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 14230/1893) on 20 April 1893 and is buried in Tumbarumba Cemetery. She died at the age of 30 on the day she gave birth to her youngest child, Jemima. This meant she left her husband with five children to care for: an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old and 3-year-old twins, as well as a newborn.
I haven't done much research into the lives of these children but evidence suggests they were raised by their maternal relatives.
Joseph and Alice obviously moved to Tumbarumba sometime between 1888 and 1890. Gold had been found in Tumbarumba as early as 1855 and mining continued into the 1930s, with new leases being taken up in the 1890s. It's likely that Joseph and Alice moved from Albury to Tumbarumba in order to mine for gold.

Marriage to Annie May Reily
In 1896, three years after his first wife's death, Joseph married Annie May Reily in Tumbarumba (NSWBDM 3998/1896). Joseph was 37 by this stage and gave his occupation as 'miner'. Annie was 21.
Annie and Joseph had the following eight children together, all born in Tumbarumba:
1. Duncan Hughie McCallum, born 1895 (NSWBDM 999999/1895 189501701). Died in North Sydney in 1940 (NSWBDM 19013/1940). Note that Duncan was born before Annie May and Joseph were married. My mother (a granddaughter of Joseph and Annie May) grew up believing that Duncan was Annie May's step-son (Alice's child) and I now think this may have been to cover up the fact that he was born out of wedlock.
2. Robert Stanley, born 1897 (NSWBDM 26605/1897). Died in Balmain in 1949 (NSWBDM 16053/1949).
3. Beatrice M, born 1900 (NSWDBM 7873/1900). Died prior to 1940 (father's death).
4. Albert Francis (Frank), born 1904 (NSWBDM 17210/1904). Died in 1954 in Goulburn.
5. Frederick George, born 1907 (NSWBDM 8381/1907). Died 21 December 1949 in Sydney [3].
6. Daisy Maude, born 1910 (NSWBDM 32672/1910). Died in 1972 in St Leonards.
7. Ronald John (Jack), born 1914 (NSWBDM 9791/1914). Died in 1986, no district given (NSWBDM 201507/1986)
8. Walter Henry (Spud), born 1917 (NSWBDM 12142/1917). Died in 1964 in Sydney. Spud married Alma and they had only one child, Graham. He was a nice boy and had cancer at one stage. Spud fought in WWII in New Guinea (per my mother, Margaret 2019).

Life in Tumbarumba 1890 - 1940
In 1896 when he married Annie May Reily, Joseph gave his occupation as 'miner'. It seems that he may also have owned land and farmed around Tumbarumba. The application below shows his 1902 application to the Tumbarumba Land Board to use Crown land, perhaps to graze animals. In 1904 when his son, Frank, was born, Joseph was 44 and gave his occupation as 'grazier' when he registered the birth.
In about 1926, Joseph and his family moved to Bowral [4].
The photos below show Joseph and his wife, Annie, with three of their sons and their future daughter-in-law, Catherine (Catherine and Frank married in 1934). They would have been taken in the Bowral area in the early 1930s.

Death
Joseph died on 28 December 1940 at Berrima District Hospital in Bowral at the age of 80. He had suffered from ill health for some years prior to his death [4]. He was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bowral on 29 December 1940 [5].
