John McGarry (son)
John McGarry was the brother of my great-great-mother, Mary Ann McGarry (later Laws).
John was the third of five children born to John and Mary Ann (nee McNamara) McGarry. He was born in Bolton in Lancashire in about 1843 and was about 13 when he arrived with his family in Sydney in 1856 aboard the David McIver. The family were assisted immigrants and seem to have settled in the Liverpool area of Sydney.

In 1859, when he was 16 years old, John was working as a shop-boy in Liverpool when he witnessed a fatal attack on a man named Simpson.

Marriage and Children
I'm not sure which of these marriages was John's however I suspect it's either the one which took place in Bathurst in 1866 or the one which took place in Sydney in 1864. I haven't been able to locate a notice in the newspapers for either marriage.
Although the death notice indicates John had four children, I can only find three registered to the 1866 marriage with Anne Edwards. There are also only three registered to the 1864 marriage with Margaret Healey.
Death
John died in Hartley in 1870 at the age of only 29 [1]. His father died not long afterwards.
