Joseph Francis Murphy (father)
Joseph Francis Murphy was my great-great-grandfather.
Note that there were at least two convicts names Joseph Murphy who arrived in New South Wales from the Lancaster area in the 1830s:
Joseph Murphy, per Henry Porcher 1835, tried Lancaster Petty Sessions (my Joseph Murphy);
Joseph Murphy, per John Barry 1838, tried Lancaster Quarter Sessions;
Note that some of the information on this page may not pertain to my Joseph Murphy. The page is a work-in-progress.
Joseph was born in 1818 or 1819 in Salford, Manchester. In early 1834 he was 15 years old and working as a labourer when he was convicted of stealing some stockings. He was tried at Lancaster Court of Petty Sessions (during the Epiphany session which was adjourned until 24 February 1834) and was sentenced to transportation for 7 years [1].

Under "Crime", the note for Joseph is "Larceny, before convicted of felony". Under "Sentences", "7 years" is noted in the "Transportation"column.
Joseph arrived in New South Wales in 1835 aboard the Henry Porcher. The ship departed Downs on 29 August 1834 with 260 male convicts on board and arrived in Port Jackson on 1 January 1835 [2].
Joseph was described as being 5ft 7.5inches, with light brown hair, hazel eyes and a ruddy complexion. He was also missing a tooth and had two scars on his left cheek.

Admission to Gaol, 1841
In 1841, six years after arriving in New South Wales and at the age of about 21, Joseph was sent to Parramatta gaol. The gaol entrance book doesn't say what his crime was.
Admissions to Lunatic Asylum, 1845 & 1848
From the record below, Joseph was admitted to the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum on 17 February 1845. He was 25 years old and the medical remarks state "excitement" which may be what we call bipolar today.
Around this time he was also admitted to Berrima Gaol, though the admission date and crime are not give in the record below:
And he was admitted again on 13 January 1848. This time he's listed as a murderer, impulsive and incurable. Note: this may not be my Joseph Murphy.
Marriage and Children
I have been unable to find a marriage record for Joseph Murphy but he married Bridget Vogle and had at least one child with her, my great-grandfather, also called Joseph Francis Murphy [3].
According to the details on his death certificate, Joseph Francis Murphy was born in about 1860 in Burrowa, NSW [1]. I've been unable to find a NSW BDM birth record for Joseph (checked 1856-1864), nor for any other children of the marriage.

- norec convict indents for Bridget or Joseph 1791-1873;
- norec convict applications to marry 1825-1851;
- Bridget Murphy - poss death cert ordered 9/4/20 - not my Bridget Murphy NSW BDM 1895/4363;
- used Vogle and Vogel spellings;
- need birth cert for son Joseph;
- need marriage cert for Joseph and Bridget;
- currently have no info re Bridget Vogle - need children's birth records or her marriage record to trace possible convict origins;
Joseph was granted his Certificate of Freedom on 28 July 1845 [4].
